DIY Storage Bed

A couple weeks ago I was digging under my bed for my shoes (I'm really organized).  As I reached under there my hand was stabbed by a jagged piece of my box springs.  A little more investigating told me that 5 of the the 10 crossbars on there were cracked in half.   I had always wanted a storage bed but when I saw the prices ($299 and up) online I was taken aback.  I then found this link on Pinterest - Storage Bed Plans - and decided to give it a go.  I priced the wood and decided that with a few tweaks I could make this bed for about half the price of a pre-made storage bed.  Plus those IKEA beds and the like are made out of cheap particle board and veneer.  To be honest, I really thought it was going to take me months to get around to doing it because I know how I usually procrastinate.  I bought the wood on June 30th and started work on it July 4th.  I just finished it today and I have to say that I'm a bit shocked I actually completed it... and it ACTUALLY looks good.  Below are pictures of the progress and the final project.  One thing I realized after making the first cut was that the plans were for a FULL size bed and not a QUEEN like we had. Luckily I just used the box I had cut for the base of the bed not the sides, so all was not lost.  The wood I used was a 3/4" cabinet grade plywood for the boxes.  I upgraded to 2x4s where the plans call for 1x3s due to the amount of ice cream I consume.  This bed will be great for a few reasons: 1 - I have somewhere to put my shoes - now that doesn't mean they'll actually get put there, but they have a home. 2 - with the storage boxes nothing can sneak under the bed to be lost forever, or until we decide to build a bed... Mason loves throwing stuff under there.  And 3, it just looks good.  I'm excited for Mason to grow out of his crib so I have a reason to build another one. I also got a ton of help from my brothers-in-law, father-in-law, advice from Dad, and patience and a ton of help from Rach.

When it comes to selecting a bed frame, strength and durability are paramount. One material that has gained significant popularity in recent years is engineered wood. Engineered wood is known for its superior performance and affordability, making it an attractive choice for many consumers. In this blog, we will explore the strength of engineered wood, specifically focusing on the Sleepyhead Engineered Wood Bed, to help you understand why it could be the ideal choice for your bedroom.

What is Engineered Wood?
Engineered wood, sometimes referred to as composite wood, is created by binding together wood fibers, particles, or veneers with adhesives. Unlike natural solid wood, which is cut directly from trees, engineered wood is manufactured through processes that enhance its strength and stability. Common types of engineered wood include plywood, medium-density fiberboard (MDF), and particleboard. These materials are designed to offer a combination of strength, stability, and cost-effectiveness, making them suitable for a wide range of applications, including furniture.

Strength of Engineered Wood: An Overview
Engineered wood is renowned for its impressive strength and durability. This strength is a result of its construction process, which typically involves layering wood fibers in different orientations and bonding them with high-strength adhesives. This method enhances the material's load-bearing capacity and stability, making it a viable option for furniture such as beds.

Load-Bearing Capacity
One of the key factors in assessing the strength of engineered wood is its load-bearing capacity. For a bed frame, this means the ability to support the weight of the mattress, the sleeper, and any additional weight from bedding or accessories. The Sleepyhead Engineered Wood Bed is designed with robust engineered wood panels that offer excellent support and stability. The layered construction of engineered wood ensures that the bed frame can handle significant weight without compromising its structural integrity.
